ROOTCON

ROOTCON 20

The completed September 23-25, 2026 ROOTCON twentieth edition at Royce Hotel & Casino in Clark, whose con-goers guide promised first-come electronic badges at on-site check-in with a Type-B non-electronic fallback. September 26 through 29 rechecks found the homepage still in pre-event wording, but the September 30 recheck found an official post-event ROOTCON 20 media drop dated September 28, 2026 with TRACK01 and TRACK02 talk-slide archives, speaker bios, lanyard and pouch artwork, the ROOTCON XX Homecoming Edition magazine, and the rc20-human-fw.bin ESP32-S3 Meshtastic badge firmware, so the edition is now marked completed while electronic-badge counts and the Type-B split stay unverified.

ROOTCON 20 Electronic Badge

The ROOTCON 20 con-goers guide documented a September 2026 badge distribution model: electronic badges distributed first-come during on-site check-in while supplies last, with a simpler Type-B non-electronic badge fallback. After the September 23-25 event, ROOTCON's official media server published a post-event ROOTCON 20 drop on September 28, 2026, including rc20-human-fw.bin, a compiled ESP32-S3 firmware image that identifies itself as the ROOTCON 20 Badge and runs a Meshtastic LoRa mesh stack on an SX1262 radio with an SSD1315 OLED, four WS2812B LEDs, and Tetris and Breakout games.

Operational history

Issues & Camp Impact

firmware source and licence gap · official media-server listing and local binary inspection · binary-only release

ROOTCON published only the compiled rc20-human-fw.bin image, built from a dirty 5b987d4 tree, with no source repository, licence, flashing guide, schematic, PCB, or BOM. Meshtastic itself is GPL-3.0 licensed, but no corresponding source for this build has been located.

Hardware and feature claims are limited to what the ESP32-S3 image header and embedded strings declare, and the record does not describe the board layout or unpublished variants.
