JSConf México 2026 Meshtastic Badge

The JSConf MX badge for the October 29-30, 2026 JavaScript conference at Jardín Americana in Guadalajara, designed by Electronic Cats. The official agenda says it is required for the Controla hardware con JavaScript workshop and is sold on the day by the instructors for USD 50; the Electronic Cats store lists it with workshop access and showed it out of stock on October 30. It is a USB-powered ESP32-S3 board with an LLCC68 915 MHz LoRa module, a 428x142 colour display, and four buttons, running a Meshtastic fork with mesh messaging, a name tag, and an axolotl collecting game.

badge-to-badge game

Axolotl proximity collection game

Every badge carries one of 11 axolotls, fixed by its MAC address with common, rare, and legendary shares of 77, 20, and 3 percent. Badges broadcast unrelayed hellos every 40 to 70 seconds, and hearing the same badge twice at -80 dBm or stronger within 30 seconds unlocks its axolotl on both sides. The collection survives power loss, and all 11 earn the Maestro Ajolotero title.

Compatibility: JSConf México 2026 badges running the badge_jscon2026 firmware.

browser control interface

Web Serial control and Badge Studio

Over USB CDC, a Web Serial page can show text, press buttons, rename the badge, upload a 428x142 image to the Canvas page, take screenshots, and stream the screen. Electronic Cats' Badge Studio and the workshop examples use this path.

Compatibility: Desktop Chrome or Edge, or Firefox 157 or later; not phones or Safari, per the official workshop note.

hands-on workshop

Controla hardware con JavaScript workshop

A two-and-a-half-hour Spanish-language workshop by Andrés Sabas of Electronic Cats in which attendees program the badge from the browser with JavaScript; the prep note asks for basic LLM experience and suggests AI coding tools. The badge is the entry requirement and is sold at the workshop.

Compatibility: Workshop participants who bought the badge; not a general conference handout.

stock firmware feature

Meshtastic messaging and name tag

The badge is a normal Meshtastic node for the phone apps over Bluetooth LE, sends text messages to other badges over LoRa without phone network or Wi-Fi, and shows the owner's name in large letters on its name-tag page.

Compatibility: Other badges and Meshtastic nodes on region US with the SHORT_FAST preset.

Operational history

Issues & Camp Impact

hardware licence and event status · maker repositories and official site · open

The hardware repository publishes KiCad sources but states no licence, while the firmware is GPL-3.0 and the JSConf artwork is CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. The official workshop note still calls both repositories private, although they were public on October 30. The conference was on its second day, with no wrap-up yet.

Reuse of the board design is not cleared, and the edition will only be marked completed once a post-event source confirms it.

isolated SHORT_FAST mesh · maker documentation · documented limitation

The firmware fixes region US and the SHORT_FAST preset, so badges talk to each other but not to Meshtastic nodes left on the stock LONG_FAST preset. The README notes that the -80 dBm unlock threshold was only measured at about 4 m, where signals were -39 to -53 dBm, and that the game's unit test runs on a host compile outside the repository test harness.

Owners who want to join a public mesh after the event have to change the radio settings themselves, and the proximity rule has not been characterised at the edge of its threshold.

missing rights-cleared image · local project policy · needs licensed original replacement

No JSConf México 2026 badge image is published. The hardware repository's front and back photos come with no licence, and the firmware repository's screen images are mockups built partly from JSConf artwork licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.

The record stays image-free until a badge photo or render with a clear reuse licence, attribution, and processing record is available.

paid workshop badge, not attendee-wide · official agenda and maker store · documented allocation boundary

The official agenda says the badge is needed for the hardware workshop and is bought on the day from the instructors for USD 50, and the maker's store sells it with workshop access. Neither source says conference tickets include it, and no unit count or sales figure is published.

The record treats the badge as an optional workshop purchase and does not present it as the conference's admission credential.
